Cairo and Aswan would be the best places to check out when you want to learn more about the ancient Egyptian civilization, along with its pyramids, temples, mummies and hieroglyphs.

-- including a tour of Old Cairo, the Pyramids (some of us climbed inside the Great Pyramid to the burial chamber), and the Egyptian Museum (unfortunately, no cameras allowed). Then an early morning flight on New Year's Day to Aswan with a visit to the dam and to Philae Temple which was moved block by block to a higher island when the dam was built. We also saw an ancient granite quarry used by the early pharaohs for the burial chambers and sarcophagi of the great pyramids.
